The Accomplishments of Helane Morrison at the SEC

Helane Morrison is an accomplished lawyer who has spent the better part of her career as an enforcement officer for the SEC’s district office in San Francisco. She joined the SEC in 1996 as the enforcement head of the San Francisco SEC office. In 1999, she became the Regional Director in charge of litigation, securities enforcement, and regulatory matters for Northern California plus the five Northwestern States under her office.

Helane Morrison rose to become the SEC administrator in San Francisco at age 46. Arthur Levitt, the then SEC Chairman, announced her appointment making her the first female officer to hold the office. She succeeded David Bayless who held the position for five years. I am impressed by Morrison’s work ethic and dedication to her responsibility as an enforcement officer.

Her Accomplishments as Administrator

When she became the administrator of the San Francisco SEC office, Morrison doubled the staff, which led to an increase in the workload of the enforcement and examination officers. The latter is tasked with looking at the books, records, and files of registered entities that include mutual funds, investment advisors, hedge funds, and brokerage firms. They later refer fraudulent cases they identify to the enforcement team, which follows up on cases forwarded to them, collect evidence and sue culpable offenders.

During her stint, Morrison took a keen interest in online brokerage services due to its growing popularity. She provided valuable information on the official website of the SEC that aimed at informing investors about these services. The information protected potential investors from fraudulent individuals who preyed on unsuspecting victims.

Helane Morrison

Helane L. Morrison is a law graduate from the Boat Hall law school in UC-Berkeley. Upon her graduation, she worked as a legal clerk and served under two judges before joining Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin. Morrison represented clients that were facing SEC lawsuits including first action defendants and securities industry officials who were under investigation. She later became an arbitrator and defended stock brokerage firms as well as brokers who faced lawsuits from clients.

When Morrison joined the SEC in 1996, she oversaw several major investigations. She supervised over enforcement actions against Republic Securities (New York), California Micro Devices’ auditors, and Dean Witter. Apart from her law degree, Morrison has a journalism degree from Northwestern University. Today, she works at Hall Capital Partners LLC as the firm’s General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer.

Eric Lefkofsky’s Tempus Company Strives to Benefit Patients from Previous Treatment of Others

Who is Eric Lefkofsky?

He is an American Entrepreneur from Chicago who created a health-tech company called Tempus. Tempus (tempus.com) is a platform that is analytical and interactive providing genomic sequencing services and molecular and therapeutic data to give physicians the information to make real-time decisions. Some of those quick decisions can be the difference between life and death!

The goal of starting Tempus was for each patient to receive benefits from others who came before them with physicians given the tools to learn as more and more data is gathered.

As both CEO and co-founder of Tempus, Lefkofsky also has a hand in battling cancer. The company, for all practical purposes, has a built in operating system to do just that.

But Lefkofsky does more than run Tempus. He is also co-founder of Lightbank, where as managing director he manages a venture fund that invests in what’s called “disruptive technologies.” He is also co-founder and chair of Groupon, a global e-commerce marketplace. Lefkofsky also co-created Uptake Technologies, which is a platform of predictive analytics that work for the some of the world’s largest industries Lefkofsky is also involved in Mediaocean, an integrated procurement technology provider and Innerworkings, a managed print and solutions promoter that is global.

According to his book “Accelerated Disruption,” Lefkofsky admits that disruptive businesses are made every day. When an individual comes up with an original idea, and that idea offers better convenience, functionality, price or service, an entire industry can be reshaped. But what happens? Businesses and ideas let that advantage that they have get away from them over time because they don’t realize how fast paced technology allows for challenges to come in an instant. That is what Lefkofsky refers to as “accelerated disruption.”

Lefkofsky says that the accelerated disruption business development is moving at the speed of the next advancement in technology. What businesses benefit from accelerated disruption? Those businesses that both control and understand the forces of technology. Those businesses will keep from getting displaced.

Lefkofsky talks about some important concepts involving startup businesses. Some of these include choosing the right industries, turning pain in an industry into competitive advantage and investigating disruptive ideas and radar testing them.

Eric Lefkofsky also advises that you can turn your customer base into a Resource and Development team that is sophisticated. He says that being able to mater the quick release product improvements art and promoting your ideas while in the face of industry and investor resistance are keys to being successful. Lefkofsky believes that a capital strategy should be developed that supports your business in those first steps and most critical stages of your business development.

Lefkofsky, who is worth more than a billion dollars, gained a lot of success by being able to explain the formation of disruptive businesses. He also provides a framework that is conceptual in the way of making your idea a reality.

In 2006, Lefkofsky formed the Lefkofsky Family Foundation, which is a private charitable foundation that advances high impact initiatives to serve communities and enhance lives.

Ricardo Tosto

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) decided to accept denunciation and file a criminal suit against Paulo Pereira da Silva, Paulinho da Força (SDD-SP). Now, as defendant, Paulinho da Força passes lawsuit that will be judged by the STF, since it has a privileged forum.

Paulinho will be investigated by the STF In the complaint of the Federal Public Ministry accepted by the STF on Tuesday (8), the parliamentarian is accused of committing a crime against financial system, Money laundering and gang formation. In his defense, Paulinho, through his lawyers, claims that he was a “victim of influence peddling” of a criminal group.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Paulinho would be the beneficiary of diversions in financing granted by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to a store and to the City Hall of Praia Grande (SP). The amounts would be diverted through a consulting firm that did not perform the services for the store and the City Hall.

The tip, called “commissions”, varied from 3% to 4% of the amounts of the financing. Still according to the MPF, Paulinho was acting from a BNDES adviser indicated by Força Sindical. Among those benefiting from the scheme, according to the MPF, are the then mayor of Praia Grande, Alberto Mourão (PSDB), João Pedro de Moura, identified as Paulinho’s adviser, Marcos Mantovani, a consulting firm, and lawyer Ricardo Tosto , Former advisor to the BNDES.

Also according to the complaint, the wife of the deputy, Elza Pereira, would have allowed the use of the bank account of the NGO My Guri, chaired by her and linked to Força Sindical, to hide part of the deflected values of the BNDES.

According to Paulinho’s defense, the alleged gang misused his name to justify the value of the consulting services charged by the company.

“In order to increase their participation in the result of the consulting work, they created a fiction that some people, among them Paulo Pereira da Silva, would receive a value that incorporated the value that they would receive,” said lawyer Marcelo Leal in the gallery during the Session in Supreme Court.

The lawyer also said that the evidence from the investigation was unlawfully collected, as telephone interceptions were originally intended to investigate other persons involved in international trafficking of women for prostitution.
