Thor Halvorssen Seen as New Face for Global Human Rights Movement

The New York Times once called him “proudly politically incorrect,” and that nicely sums up who Thor Halvorssen truly is.

The founder of the New York City-based Human Rights Foundation (HRF) continues talking loudly for those people around the world, whose voices have been silenced by dictators and other tyrants destroying their nations and the basic human rights of their people for further greed and political gain.

Mr. Halvorssen has seen it all and experienced some difficult moments as he tells the weeklystandard.com.

He logs many friendly flier miles, sneaking into places he really shouldn’t, like the time he and his cameraman jetted off to Ho Chi Minh in 2010 to interview ThichQuang Do, the father of the banned Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, who had suffered under house arrest for 28 years.

Mr. Halvorssen had quietly made his way into the monastery and procured a fascinating interview with the patriarch. Upon his exit, Vietnamese authorities were watching and nabbed Mr. Halvorssen detaining him for quite some time, until he could convince the Vietnamese police that he was in fact, merely a Buddhist seeker. Hr. Halvorssen claims he was beaten badly during the detainment, while his cameraman had luckily escaped out a side door with the video card hidden on his person.

Mr. Halvorssen has traveled the globe trying to help dissidents and political prisoners as he shines a glaring light on those nations who force their people to live under ugly despotism.

He goes after the “big boys,” like North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, whose citizens live in constant fear for being taken to one of the country’s unspeakably horrific prison camps, for the most minor of offenses. It is believed that some 200,000 remain imprisoned there, in an East Asian country ironically called, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea .

Thor Halvorssen has had his life threatened many times, and others have tried to label him this or that. In his mind, he is not a conservative but more of a “classical liberal” in the John Stuart Mill philosophy.

The Power of Securus Technologies in Our Local Jails

The hardest part about working in a jail is the fact that the inmates could do us serious harm if we let our guard down for a second. These inmates have years and countless hours a day to plan things while we as officers have 8 hours a day in the jail. To keep the peace in the jail and to help prevent crime, we have to use some pretty unique resources.

At the visitor center, we have many new pieces of technology that scan every person and their belongings before they can meet with an inmate. It would not take much, like a kitchen fork, for an inmate to turn it into a weapon and have an edge over the officers. Worse than that, visitors who give the inmates drugs complicate the problems we have because an inmate high on heroin is more dangerous than you could imagine. Even a group of six officers could have an issue bringing an inmate to the ground who is high on drugs.

To help make the jail safer for us officers, visitors, and the inmates too, we recently got together with Securus Technologies to update our inmate communication system. The CEO of Securus Technologies, Richard Smith, talks about how his Dallas based company has one objective that all 1,000 employs work towards each day. They believe making the world a safer place for us all is the key, and our jails are certainly safer with their new system in place.

I was monitoring the inmate calls last month when the system alerted me to chatter between an inmate and someone who was coming to visit. He was talking in code about bringing in a large amount of drugs. We were able to put surveillance on the visitor and not only took down the suspect before he got to jail, we discovered a new source of drugs we never had eyes on.

He is an expert in the surgical management of the jaw. He is sought after as an advisor and a teacher. He lectures on topics relating to bone regeneration.

Dr. Cameron Clokie, established the Bone Integrated Implant Group at McGill in 1993. He works at new technology and new techniques that will eventually improve on current processes. He has been a consultant for a number of different companies and industrial projects. Dr. Clokie moved to Mount Sinai Hospital where he performs operations, and had clinic. He is the Head of the Graduate Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has worked with other doctors exploring the use of various carriers for the BMP. Cameron Clokie works as a consultant to Genesco Regeneration Sciences, Inc. His goal is to develop bio-implants that will replace bone grafts.

Dr. Cameron Clokie has been working in the area of directing the body to regrow bone to help with reconstructive surgery. He is known for his work with a 60-year old patient who lost seven centimeters of his jaw bone to a benign tumour. He underwent a bone regeneration procedure to regrow the bone removed.

Read more: Cameron Clokie DDS, Ph.D.: Executive Profile & Biography

The procedure involves using a protein to get trick stem cells into becoming bone tissue. Clokie says its similar to how a baby’s bones grow. With the technique, he has actually regrown a bone in the jaw just like the one that was lost. He says that most methods of rebuilding lost parts is to remove bone and muscle from on spot on the body and graft in onto another part.

In rebuilding the 60-year old’s jaw, it took a surgery of about four hours and within two weeks the patient was back to normal. Another patient who had ameloblastoma, which can eventually shut off the airway, was not so lucky. She did not qualify for the surgery and had to have a 19-hour surgery, where a part of her chin was used to replace the removed jaw bone. Her recover time was two months. She has one more surgery to complete the process.

For the first patient Dr. Clokie added a growth protein to a gel that was molded into place in the patients jaw. It is placed in the missing section and supported by a titanium rod. Several days later, blood vessels are growing over the gel and it is dissolving. The jawbone then regrows to close the gap. It is an amazing process on BizCommunity.com.

The drawback to the surgery is that most insurance companies will not cover the cost of the procedure and it is expensive. It can cost more that $6000. It is said that this procedure has been used to help fuse the spine. Dr. Clokie is now focusing on lower the cost of the procedure so that others can benefit.

Beneful Undergoes Changes To Address Customer Concerns

Pets are being accepted as family members by their owners and so pet owners are becoming more wary of the ingredients that are found in the foods they give their pets. They try to find foods that are as close as possible to the composition of human food. This is according to an article by the Huffington Post. This is why pet foods, and dog food in particular are coming under criticism for the ingredients used in manufacture. One such brand is Beneful, a product of Nestle Purina PetCare. Beneful ranks as one of the top dog food sellers in the U.S., boasting about 14 million dogs who enjoy the product each year, according to Nielsen.

The criticism leveled against the brand ranges from the use of propylene glycol to the possibility of mycotoxins. These are some of the reasons that saw a class action suit initiated against Nestle Purina in early 2015. However, close to a third of the plaintiffs have dropped from the case and the allegations keep being changed by the class action lawyers. The company has made it clear by sell dog food on Amazon.com. It does not plan to settle the suit.Nestle Purina have embarked on reformulating the Beneful dry dog foods. In an interview with the Beneful team leading the changes, Vice President of PetCare Nutrition Research, Dr. Janet Jackson, the formulas have been undergoing development for more than two years and had nothing to do with the class action suit. The new formulas will be hitting select outlets starting May 9th.

All Beneful dry dog foods feature new recipes. All except one of the formulas will feature real meat, something that will come as a change. The formula that includes salmon will feature real salmon as an ingredient in 2017 as the company is still sourcing the required amount of salmon to implement the change.Other changes include the removal of sugar from the list of ingredients and also the removal of propylene glycol. Dr. Jackson stated that the propylene glycol was used in making some of the pieces chewy, something that does seem to love. For dog lovers, the new formulas are worth a look. Also visit: https://www.beneful.com/products/wet-dog-food/ to learn more.
